How to select a mattress

Density, ILD and firmness are all key areas that assess the memory foam mattresses technical capabilities.

Density is based on the level of the visco-elastic material that is inside the memory foam and relates to the actual memory foam layer rather than the whole mattress itself. If the memory foam layer has a higher density it will be able to provide the user which much better and beneficial support than if the layer had a lower density. In the higher density layer the air cavities are much smaller and much more compact therefore not allowing the mattress to give in under the weight. Therefore it provides a wider range of benefits and an improved sleeping surface for the user than a mattress that has lower density. The density of the mattress also indicates the longevity of the mattress as a higher density will last much longer before having to be replaced.

Why all memory foam is not equal

The benefits offered by memory foam mattresses have resulted in a sudden increase in the amount of products that have recently burst on to the market. There has been a huge increase in the amount of companies selling the memory foam mattresses which has had a positive effect in that it brings much more choice and variety to the consumer, but unfortunately it has resulted in many poor quality products being sold. The cheaper mattresses are not giving the benefits that they should and not serving their purpose.

The complexity of the memory foam mattress technology and the materials that are used to make the products means that it is very difficult to define it under a certain price bracket, especially if they are required to have a certain level of performance. This causes problems with people selling products that are not actually the original memory foam, but a cheaper substitute material. The low grade mattresses don’t provide the perks of real memory foam and the manufacturers can still claim that it is memory foam and use the popularity of the technology to their advantage.

A true memory foam mattress is made up of high quality visco-elastic memory foam material and, in addition, layered composition where each part works together to provide the best possible performing memory foam mattress. Some of the cheaper alternatives on the market do follow this same technology; however they are engineered using lower quality materials that do not provide the same support and life span that the high end memory foam mattresses do. The lower end alternatives and the cheapest on the market, often provide a single piece of poor quality foam that cannot offer the support, comfort and performance given by a genuine, high quality memory foam mattress.

Will memory foam make me too hot

There are rumours online that has indicated memory foam mattresses can make you too warm during the night or that you ‘sleep warmer’ than if you sleep in a traditional spring mattress. However this is not the case for all memory foam mattresses. Most of the memory foam mattresses on the on the market are not the same, some of the models and brands out there will perform better than others.

In order to understand, we need to grasp why some of the memory foam mattresses can feel warmer than your traditional spring mattresses. There are many variables and factors that can be considered when trying to answer this question. Some brands, materials used and the way that they are constructed have a key role to play in mitigating heat retention; it is difficult to say how effective these methods are as there are so many variables to consider.

Not all of the solutions bring a noticeable difference and even regular approaches by manufacturers to overcome this issue will not answer whether a certain memory foam mattress brand or design will be better performing than another.

Another issue that arises is that comfort is a completely subjective factor. What one person believes is comfy another may not as every individual has different preference when it comes to the surface that they recline on. Some like a very warm sleeping environment and others prefer it to be cooler. Individual genetics play a very important part when determining the temperature of their mattress. Factors that can have an effect could be age, gender, weight, height and BMI all dependants on whether we think our mattress and duvet combination is too hot, too cold or just right. These are also very general factors; what about underlying medical issues and conditions and also taking in to external factors to us, such as the environment, this can all alter the experience a memory foam mattress gives to its end user.

This all determines that the personal experience of a memory foam mattress is dependant upon the user. People will have different bedding, lighter or thicker duvets that can adjust the temperature while you sleep. Some individuals will also have small rooms with their beds close to radiators and some will place their beds next to windows where it is going to be naturally cooler.

Even in this world of the highest and latest technology, there is no manufacturer who can guarantee that their mattress will be completely right for you. We’ll shortly explain precisely how Ergoflex memory foam mattresses are designed to regulate temperature and negate overheating. First of all, we’ll look at some of the commonly adopted approaches within the market as a whole.

Coolmax covers:

Created in the 1980’s by DuPont, Coolmax is a patented fabric that is widely used in sportswear, in which its wicking attributes dealing with excessive sweat. It’s no surprise that Coolmax has become such a staple material in this sector, as it keeps athletes drier than traditional materials. But how does Coolmax cope when it comes to mattress coverings?

At Ergoflex we don’t use Coolmax for a number of reasons. We believe that the very qualities that make Coolmax such an effective material for sports clothing are the same reasons that make it inappropriate for bedding – as it works best when you’re already sweating.

If a memory foam mattress is warming up over the course of a night, then the presence of a Coolmax cover won’t deal with the problem at source. Also, the vast majority of people will have their own sheets on the mattress, covering the Coolmax material and preventing it from performing its sweat-wicking action.

With these reasons in mind, we don’t believe it is beneficial to use Coolmax on a Ergoflex memory foam mattress. It’s an innovative and revolutionary material, but not a good fit in this case.

Outlast covers:

Outlast is another technologically developed material, with an innovative temperature sensitive ability. Outlast uses ‘phase change materials’ (PCMs) that regulate their performance based on body temperature. At Ergoflex we’re impressed by Outlast’s many benefits, and we’re in fact a licensed partner which enables us to employ the material in our development processes.

However, while Outlast is a far more appropriate mattress cover material compared to Coolmax in our opinion, it cannot realistically guarantee a ‘cool nights sleep’ each time.

Ventilation channels:

We believe that the best way to combat the build up of heat within a memory foam mattress is to look at the causes – namely, the solid packed layered interior of the mattress itself. That’s why we’ve developed a specially-designed ventilation layer to encourage air flow within the mattress core and the various layers.

Breathable properties of the visco-elastic memory foam:

The breathable ability of visco-elastic memory foam is an often overlooked factor, and it varies massively between different products from different manufacturers.

Memory foam, buy its very nature, forms itself to the shape of your body, caressing pressure points and offering support where needed. It’s because of this that a memory foam mattress will be in direct contact with your body more than a traditional pocket spring mattress would ever be. This performance means that you’re fully supported and comfortable, but what about the insulating properties of this contact?

Traditional pocket spring mattresses, while delivering support to key pressure points such as the hips, can leave clear spaces between the body and the mattress itself. This, combined with a largely hollowed interior core, means that these mattresses are don’t heat up.

Ergoflex’s high density third generation open celled visco elastic memory foam allows air to flow directly through the material, resulting in a dramatically cooler sleeping environment compared to alternative memory foam mattresses with closed cell foam and no ventilation layer.
