You have bought yourself a memory foam mattress, well done! This is one of the best investments you can make to improve your sleep, but you are not sure of which bed base is best for a memory foam mattress?
Choosing the right bed base for your memory foam mattress can be difficult with so many different types of bed bases available. Choosing the right one can also be detrimental to the comfort, support and longevity of your mattress.
To help you make your decision, here is a guide on some of the most popular types of bed bases, followed by our advice on the best bed base specifically for a memory foam mattress.
From platform bed bases, to metal bed frames and electric beds, there are a whole range of bed bases you can choose.
Some of the most common types of bed bases include;
Platform bed bases are great as they are flat, durable and strong. They are good for memory foam mattresses as they are made with heavier materials and often incorporate a strong layer of ventilated plywood to keep the mattress level and supported.
The slat bed base is a more lightweight approach. They are relatively easy to assemble, and will often stand slightly higher off the ground than the usual platform bed. To be on the safe side make sure that the wooden slats are wide and close together, say 5-10 cm across and 4 -7 cm or less apart as this will ensure that your memory foam mattress is properly supported, and won’t sink through the cracks.
If you want to use a metal frame, then make sure it provides enough support to hold a heavier memory foam mattress on top of a high quality box spring. For larger beds, such as Queens or Kings, you might want to consider getting a 5th leg added to the frame to provide extra support.
An electric bed is an adjustable bed with a multi-hinged lying surface which allows a fully customised sleep. The adjustable setting of the electric bed means that the user is able to adjust the height of the bed, as well as it’s upper and lower body positions to suit their desired sleeping position.
Another benefit these beds have is that they offer the flexibility for users to be able to sit up and watch tv or read in bed.
A futon bed base is a convenient bed base that can easily be rolled out for more space. It can easily fit under your existing bed, saving your storage and not needing double the bed space. It usually has the same slats as the bed which provides extra support.
A Divan bed base is a platform bed base that contains drawers for storage. A divan bed base is often made from fabric, which gives it a sleek style. Many people love the convenience of the drawers as this saves space and you wouldn’t even know the draws are there!
Ensemble bed bases are large and flat bases that are low to the ground, usually just a few centimeters from the ground. The benefit of an ensemble bed base is that it does not come with headboards or foot boards, therefore making them more convenient as they take up less space. An ensemble base would be ideal if you have a spring mattress to provide the right amount of support.
We would not advise you to put a memory foam mattress directly on the floor. All mattresses require air ventilation that they cannot get when they are placed on the floor, therefore the floor is not a suitable platform for many mattresses.
Placing a memory foam mattress on the floor can also impact the performance of the mattress. A bed frame plays the role in supporting a mattress to provide a stable and comfortable night’s sleep. By not using a bed base, it will decrease the ability of your memory foam mattress to provide a sound, pressure-relieving sleep.
So, what actually is the best bed base for a memory foam mattress?
A memory foam mattress works well on all types of bed bases from electric to ensemble. However, while a memory foam mattress may be okay on a slightly, sprung bed base or a base with curved, convex slats it will perform better on a completely flat, hard and stable platform.
To help you get your best night’s sleep and optimise the use of your memory foam mattress, we recommend you choose a platform base that keeps the mattress level and supported so your body feels comfortable and stable all night long. A platform bed base provides a strong, flat surface that does not interfere with the memory foam properties that make this mattress so good.
