Does sleeping tight mean you are safe from bed bugs?

22-06-2012

It is one of those throwaway lines that most people have used at some point in their lives, “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite”. However, most people haven’t given the meaning of this statement much thought, up until recently they haven’t needed to, as bed bugs were restricted to myth. Unfortunately, bed bugs are back.

Bed bugs are parasites that feed on human blood, they live in warm areas, most commonly the bed, and snack on the bed’s occupants throughout the night. People with a bed bug problem will often wake with itchy bites which are often located in the groin and armpits but can be anywhere on the body.

During the 20th century this age old pest had been pushed back by modern practices. Due to a number of reasons, including a tolerance to various pesticides, they have returned. They arrived in Australia about ten years ago and have been making their presence felt ever since.

Despite the implied suggestion in the old phrase, sleeping tight will not help you with bed bugs. In fact, they are actually quite difficult to get rid of, requiring a fairly thorough eradication. If you think you have bed bugs call your local pest control company.
