Everyone knows about the dangers of diabetes but far fewer are aware of sleep apnea. Part of the reason for this ignorance is that many people do not even know that they have sleep apnea as it occurs while they are asleep. While they may not be aware they have the condition, many will suffer the consequences, one of the more worrying of which is similar to diabetes.
A recent study has shown that people with sleep apnea can suffer from the same heart damage as those with diabetes. In a controlled study the researchers examineded how well the arteries of those with diabetes and sleep apnea were able to function in a series of tests. They found that both groups had stiff arteries.
These findings are in keeping with other studies on sleep apnea which also found that it has negative effects on arteries.
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterised by disrupted breathing. It is extremely difficult for the sufferer to self diagnose and will often only be spotted by a partner or doctor. If you believe that your partner has sleep apnea then you need to seek medical attention as it should be remedied as soon as possible.
