Eating a spicy meal in the run-up to bedtime can result in a disrupted, poor quality sleep, says a report from the International Journal of Pyschophysiology. A study by a team of Australian researchers involved two groups of healthy subjects, one of which who ate meals with Tabasco sauce and mustard, and one who ate non-spicy meals.
The scientists found that test subjects who ate spicy meals spent less time in the early modes of sleep known as Stage 2, as well as the deeper, slow-wave Stages 3 and 4 - meaning that they took longer to get to sleep, and when they did their sleep quality was of lower quality than those who didn’t eat spicy foods.
