Hotel trials human bed warmers

Human bed warmers are being used at a London hotel as a novel way to help guests get a good night’s sleep. Holiday Inn’s bed warmers, described as ‘walking electric blankets’, are clad in specially-made all-in-one suits and lie in beds for five minutes before guests go to sleep, helping create a comfortable temperature that is more conducive to going to sleep.

“There’s plenty of scientific evidence to show that sleep starts at the beginning of the night when body temperature starts to drop. The decline occurs partly because the blood vessels of the hands, face and feet open up and release heat,” said Dr Chris Idzikowski, director of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre. “A warm bed – approximately 20 to 24 degrees Celsius – is a good way to start this process whereas a cold bed would inhibit sleep.”

Currently being trialled at the chain’s London hotels, the scheme is set to be offered in Manchester at the end of January as part of what could become a widespread service offering if it proves popular.
