Removing urine from memory foam mattresses

17-05-2012

Unfortunately children and even some adults will suffer from a loss of bladder control in the night, leaving the mattress soaked in urine. If this happens to your super comfortable and incredibly supportive memory foam mattress then you need to act quickly.

If you do not own a waterproof protector, first take of the mattress cover and get it in the washing machine. Make sure you do a long cycle hot wash as this will help to get as much of the urine out as possible. Then go to the kitchen and grab baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and mix it with a very small amount of bleach (hydrogen peroxide) and some water if you need to spread it out over a large area. Apply this mixture to the affected area. The two chemicals should help to neutralise the smell and damage of the urine.

Once applied grab an old towel and dry up the excess liquid. Let it sit for an hour or two so that the mixture can combat the urine, the grab a hairdryer and use it on the lowest setting to dry the mattress off. The memory foam will hold onto a lot of liquid so it may take a while to dry.
