China’s sleep disorders hit highs

20-03-2013

The number of people in China suffering from some form of sleep disorder has reached 38%, reports the Chinese Sleep Research Society (CSRS). The figure outweighs the global average of 27%, indicating a particular problem with sleep in the world’s most populous nation.

The CSRS claims that there are over 80 sleep disorders suffered in China, with most contributing directly to ill health. Considering heart problems, over one million people each year die of coronary disease. The sleep disorder of sleep apnoea is known to be linked with these conditions.

The CSRS is raising awareness of the health impacts of poor sleep prior to World Sleep Day on March 21st, with a focus on heart disease in particular. It is hoped that by increasing the understanding that regular bad sleep is linked to heart problems China’s sleep disorder sufferers will take action on their issues.
