Could your sleep benefit by using a white-noise machine?

20-03-2012

Generally if you are having trouble sleeping the last thing you’d think of needing is a machine that makes noise, but research shows that having a white noise machine helps people sleep. The reason for this is that white noise is random, it has no distinct form or pattern, and as such it helps distract the mind, calming you and ensuring other noises do not distract you.

There are a number of white noise machines available on the market and it is probably a good idea to do some research on them before buying one as they will vary in quality. Many emit noises similar to rain or waterfalls and it is important that you find one that has a well designed soundscape. People who suffer from tinnitus often use them as they help to mask the constant ear ringing that these people suffer from.

It might be a good idea to see if you can download some white noise on your computer before you buy a specialise machine so that you can see whether it sounds like something that will help you sleep. There are many sites that have a variety of white noise generators on them, so you can browse through the different types before settling on one.
