It is not hard to deduce that sleep deprivation is bad for your health, but just how bad it really is may come as a surprise to many. In fact, the list of negative health effects caused by sleep deprivation is incredibly long and scary.
In its entirety, here it is. Sleep deprivation can cause irritability, cognitive impairment, memory lapses or loss, impaired moral judgment, sever yawning, hallucinations, symptoms similar to ADHD, an impaired immune system, an increased risk of diabetes, increased heart rate variability, increased risk of heart disease, decreased reaction time and accuracy, tremors, aches, growth suppression, risk of obesity and depression.
Sleep deprivation causes a wide range of both physical and psychological problems and often these problems become cumulative, so that as one increases in severity the others will increase in severity and the sleep deprivation will also become worse. This is why it is so important to nip sleep problems in the bud early on as otherwise they can balloon out of control, making it much harder to rectify later on.
