Is Light Affecting The Way You Sleep?

02-11-2011

If you are having trouble, you need to work through all the potential causes. There are a variety of different issues that can inhibit sleep, from physical disturbances through to psychological troubles. To try and remedy your insomnia, you need to work out exactly what it is that is hindering your ability to go to sleep.

Many people struggle because they are depressed, anxious or stressed. Psychological insomnia is extremely common and is cumulative, in that the more you struggle to sleep, the harder sleep becomes, and so on.

However, many others are not troubled by anything in their heads, but rather are kept awake by physical stimuli. One of the major physical factors, and one that a lot of people overlook, is light. Like all animals, humans take many cues from the outside world. One of the major sets of cues is the relative light levels and durations of light. These light levels tell us when to feel awake and when to feel tired.

If you are struggling to drop off at night, it could be that you are not getting enough light in the morning. Exposure to light in the morning is critical as it tells the body to wake up. If you are struggling, try to get more light in the morning, it could just work.
