Research published this week has revealed a link between adjusting the clock forward for summertime and an increase in heart attacks, due to issues related to sleep deprivation. The study, from scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and published in the New England Medical Journal of Medicine, found a 5% rise in heart attack cases in the week following the clocks moving forward.
The study focused on all heart attacks recorded in Sweden between 1987 and 2006, and concluded that the sudden variation in sleeping patterns adversely affects biological rhythms.
"In the spring, there is a clear statistically significant increase in the risk of suffering a heart attack in the week the clocks are set forward," said Imre Janszkey, researcher on the investigation. "Some people find it quite difficult to adjust to it, and the sleep quality and duration is affected and it takes a certain toll."
