Almost all new mums suffer from sleep deprivation, according to a new report published this week. The Pampers Nappies Sleep Report, produced with Tresellian Family Care Centres, found that 97% of mothers with children less than two years old had sleep problems. The report also revealed that nearly 40% of toddlers over 18 months woke up at least once per night, with one in six waking up three or more times, underlining the long-term nature of the issue.
In keeping with typical sleep deprivation effects, around 70% of new mothers admitted that the regular night-time awakenings made them irritable, tired and unable to be as attentive as they would like during the day.
“One of the things that a parent can do to ensure their baby gets a decent amount of sleep is to check their environment is conducive for sleep,” said Professor Catherine Fowler. “Getting your baby into a daily routine is the first step to solving this but it takes a lot of discipline, which often goes out the window when you have a crying baby who won’t sleep. It is important for mums to realise that there is help out there and they don’t need to suffer in silence.”
