New research from America has found that the secret to a woman's good night's sleep is a happy marriage, with usual suspects such as money worries, sex, alcohol and caffeine consumption playing a lesser role than previously thought. The University of Pittsburgh team looked at the sleeping patterns of almost 2000 women aged 42 to 52 in seven US cities before making their conclusions, which have been published in the Behavioural Sleep Medicine journal.
"We found that happily married women report fewer sleep disturbances including difficulty falling asleep, nighttime awakenings, early morning awakenings, and restless sleep, as compared to women reporting lower marital happiness," Professor Wendy Troxel told Reuters. "The results showed that even after taking into account all of these factors that are known to influence sleep, the level of marital happiness emerged as an independent risk factor for the existence of sleep disturbances. Being happily married was associated with fewer sleep disturbances, even after accounting for sleep medications."
The research also looked at ethnicity as a factor, and reported that Caucasian and African-American participants reported more sleep disturbances than Japanese, Hispanic and Chinese women.
