The condition sleep apnoea, characterised by pauses in breathing during the night, could worsen Type 2 diabetes, according to the results of a new study from the University of Chicago. Researchers found a link between apnoea and glucose control in patients which directly impacts on the severity of diabetes, although the sleep condition is often undiagnosed.
“At least 80% of their patients, if properly screened and studied, will be found to have OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea), which is a treatable condition,” said John Heffner, past president of the American Thoracic Society. “Treating their breathing problem might improve their glycemic control and long-term complications from diabetes.”
Sleep apnoea and diabetes have been linked in previous studies, including a University of Birmingham investigation, however the Chicago research is the first to show a correlation with glucose levels.
