Schoolchildren in Scotland are being taught the value of a good night’s sleep with specialist lessons on how to wind down in the evening and get the sleep they need to perform well academically. The lessons, being run initially as a pilot in four secondary schools across Glasgow by the charity Sleep Scotland, aim to combat the trend of youngsters focusing on intensive stimulating activities such as video games, computers and mobile phones late into the evening, which have a direct negative effect on sleep quality and overall performance the following day.
By learning the value of good quality sleep and the many ways it can bring improvements to health and wellbeing it is hoped that the children will adopt more sleep-friendly evening routines and reap the benefits with better performance at school.
"Children need sleep to reach their full potential,” said Jane Ansell from Sleep Scotland. “You wouldn't send someone to school without having the right amount of food, so why would you send them without enough sleep?"
